Birthday Special: Superstar Rajinikanth’s five biggest box office hits!

As Superstar Rajinikanth celebrates his 64th birthday today we look at some of the biggest successes in his 40-year career. He started his exciting career with Apoorva Rangangal in 1975 and today his biggest release ever, Lingaa, is set to hit screens worldwide. Rajinikanth’s milestones are like no other actor’s – he went from bus conductor to actor, villain to hero, and today, the highest paid actor in India with allegedly a salary of Rs 60 crore for Lingaa!

As fans queue up to watch Superstar in double action in this flick directed by K S Ravikumar, Lingaa is supposedly set to break all Tamil box office records. Rajini’s Muthu is Japan’s all-time favourite film and grossed Rs 6 crore when it released there in 1998. Meanwhile, here’s a quick recap of his five biggest box office hits so far:

Enthiran

Starring ex-Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan opposite the Superstar who played the role of Chitti, the robot, and Dr Vaseekaran, this movie rocked the box office. This Sun Pictures film with music by A R Rahman and directed by Shankar was the second highest-grossing Indian film at that time after Aamir Khan’s 3 idiots and in fact, was the top-grossing film in India at the box office in 2010. According to Box Office India, the movie netted Rs 186.5 crore in India in addition to the overseas earnings of about US $12 million. With total revenues of about Rs 260 crore, this movie is in a league of its own in Kollywood! Songs from Enthiran like Pudhiya Manidha, Kilimanjaro, Kadhal Anukkal and Arima Arima still remain hot on radio.

 Sivaji: The Boss

Directed by Shankar, this Tamil flick released in 2007 was a superhit too. With Shriya Saran (Tamizhselvi) on his arm in this film, Rajinikanth avenged his enemies with élan and made India successful with his foundation. Again, it was A R Rahman’s musical genius that gave it some wonderful hit tracks like Vaa Ji Vaa Ji, Balleilakka and Sahana. Produced by AVM, the movie is widely reported to have grossed about Rs 130 crore. The movie was re-released in 3D as Sivaji 3D and thirty minutes were edited out to make it crisper in this release. It is the first Indian film to be released in Dolby Atmos and this was a new milestone again in Tamil cinema and for the Superstar. This flick was released on Rajinikanth’s birthday in 2012.

Chandramukhi

A remake of Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu , Chandramukhi was a film that had Rajinikanth fans in a comical tizzy and frightened as well. Released in 2005, the comedy-horror film starred the Superstar – as Dr Saravanan and King Vettaiyan – with Jyothika and Nayanthara. The 50th film to be produced by Sivaji Productions, it was a runaway hit. Grossing about Rs 65 crore, this flick had music by Vidyasagar that turned out to be a big plus for it. Raa Raa and Konjam Neram were most sought-after by music lovers.

Padayappa

Who can forget this 1999 film where Nilambari challenges Padayappa with her razor-sharp tongue and penetrating eyes? It released for Tamil New Year and took the biggest ever opening at the time in Kollywood. A R Rahman was part of this hit combo and his numbers like En Peru Padayappa, Minsara Kanna and Suthi Suthi rocked the charts. Ramya Krishnan, who replaced Simran, is till today known for her fantastic portrayal of Nilambari. Grossing around Rs 30 crore at the box office, this was another big film in Rajinikanth’s career.

Baashha

In 1995, there was one word on every Tamilian’s lips. Baashha. Starring the Superstar with Naghma, Baashha was directed by Suresh Krissna. Playing a simple autodriver called Manikkam who then becomes a don called Manikk Baashha, Rajini won the hearts of the masses and classes alike. Deva scored the music for this film and the numbers Azhagu Azhagu, Style Style Thaan and Naan Autokaaran, is still on everyone’s lips. This movie grossed Rs 25 crore in 1995 and till today is considered one of Rajinikanth’s top five movies.

Anushka Sharma's nickname is Nusheshwar

She enjoys her fame in Bollywood, but actress Anushka Sharma says for her friends, she is still Nusheshwar, the nickname with which they call her.

The actress shared the story of her wacky nicknames on TV show "Captain Tiao".

Anushka, who appeared on the Disney Channel show to promote her forthcoming movie "PK", revisited her childhood days on the chat show with chubby host Sadhil Kapoor.

"My parents never gave me a nickname. But for my friends, I am everything from 'Nushki' to 'Nusheshwar'," she said in the episode, which will be aired Sunday.

The actress also shared that she was always a mischievous child and that she pulled her brother's leg a lot. Anushka looked as radiant as ever in a blue crop top and black and white polka dotted calf-length skirt.

Dolly Ki Doli to arrive with Baby

This Dolly has bigger plans up her sleeves. While last week it had seemed that she would fly solo, there is a change in mood for sure. Now, she would have Baby for company and insiders believe that it is a right move indeed.

"With its confirmed release for January 23, Dolly Ki Doli is practically finding an uninterrupted two week run for itself. What makes it all the more special is the fact that there would be as many as five holidays to enjoy in this interim period," says a trade insider.

With a four day long Republic Day weekend followed by a regular weekend beginning January 30, the makers of the Sonam Kapoor have done their homework right.

"Yes, this way the film is clashing with Baby but then it belongs to an altogether different genre. Moreover, Republic Day advantage is huge; it cannot be ignored" our source adds.

Earlier the film was aiming for February7, release but with quick progress made by first time director Abhishek Dogra, the light hearted film with Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma as the three male leads would now see a much earlier arrival. Moreover, the posters have done the trick as well, what with Sonam Kapoor promising to bring yet another entertaining show after Khoobsurat.

When contacted, producer Arbaaz Khan confirmed the developments, "We were always contemplating various dates and now have settled down to January23. I am told this should be a good date, considering the fact that films like Dolly Ki Doli do require a week to settle down and then consolidate from there."

2014 itself has seen two such examples where Kangna Ranaut's Queen gained from strength to strength, what with its subsequent weeks being better than the opening week. Later, Sonam's own Khoobsurat gained from positive word of mouth. Though it could well be a coincidence that both were women-centric films, the fact remains that they did manage to find a good window due to which audience footfalls were steady.

Now Arbaaz, Sonam and their team are expecting similar outcome for Dolly Ki Doli too which arrives on January 23, and then enjoys an uninterrupted run till the arrival of Shamitabh on February 6.

"Of course, eventually it is the content that does the talking. Now that's something I am pretty confident about. Even in the face of competition, Dolly will find quite a few 'baraatis'," chuckles Arbaaz.

The film's promo would be arriving later this weekend.

Horrex Returns: Top 10 Bollywood films where horror meets sex

The genre of 'Horrex' films has been around for quite some time in Bollywood, but not as much as it has suddenly gained steam. With film after film bringing together horror and adequate doses of sex, this genre is steadily on the rise these days. The Ramsay Brothers were the ones who immortalised this genre of films, as far as Bollywood is concerned; and despite most of their films having been passed off as B-Grade ones, horrex is now back in fashion. The trailer of Alone, which released a while back, is another entrant to the horrex genre. Here's taking a look at ten of Bollywood's best films, which have brought together horror and sex.

Alone
Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover's upcoming film, from what it's being marketed as, has horror and much sex in it. Bipasha being the horror queen that she has now come to be known as, and Karan's unabashed sexuality - makes Alone one that brings together horror and sex.

Ragini MMS 2
Ekta Kapoor cast Sunny Leone in the sequel to Ragini MMS, and the movie turned out to be more sex than horror. Well, with a porn star as the lead, generous offerings of sex were but natural - so went the filmmakers' thoughts. Add to that the oomph factor - that Sunny is synonymous with - and the film went on to churn an impressive amount of money.
